PEAK VOLUME PERIOD MAY CAUSE DELAYS FOR NEW
UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS WITH STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR
December 20, 2019
WETHERSFIELD, CT – Those filing a new unemployment insurance claim in the coming weeks may experience delays due to seasonal factors creating a peak claims period that typically runs from December to mid-January, the Connecticut Department of Labor said today.
The number of new claims filed increases by nearly 300 percent during this period due to holiday closings, school vacations and cold-weather shutdowns of various businesses such as construction.
Customers can file an initial claim online, but applications must be individually processed by Labor Department staff to determine eligibility, State Labor Commissioner Kurt Westby said.
“The traditionally high volume of claims during this time may cause some delay for new customers, but those with established claims should not experience any issues,” Westby said. “We are processing new claims as quickly as possible, and we truly appreciate the patience of our customers during this extremely busy season.”
The agency has a tip sheet to assist those filing a new claim during the peak period. The tip sheet also reminds residents that new unemployment insurance claims must be filed using the agency’s online system, located at www.filectui.com.
Available 24/7, the user-friendly site is available in English or Spanish, and initial claims can be filed using a computer, tablet, laptop or smart phone.
To further assist the public, UI Benefits Specialists located Monday through Friday at the five full service American Job Centers - in Bridgeport, Hamden, Hartford, Montville and Waterbury - can help those with questions or having difficulty filing their online claim.
Specialists are available limited hours at the smaller affiliate job centers. Those planning to visit an affiliate office for assistance should check the online schedule at www.filectui.com prior to visiting the office.
